Today was a day of firsts for Miss Hannah! She went swimming in the swimming pool for the first time! Grandma Kylene found her an adorable swimsuit (mostly because we couldn’t keep on her swim diaper without a swimsuit…not for modesty or style!). She put it on bright and early this morning and we headed down to the pool. She didn’t know what to think at first and kept pulling up her feet. But she soon got the hang of it and loved the water!

She also had her 7th month birthday yesterday! It’s hard to believe that seven months have passed already! She is getting so big and can do so much more than when she was a newborn! She is crawling everywhere! And is pulling up on things all the time! Now if only I could get her to say “mama!” Oh well!

Hannah also celebrated her first 4th of July! What a GREAT place to celebrate too! The fireworks in Washington D.C. were amazing! We decided not to go to the Mall to watch them because is was rainy and we figured it would be too crowded and crazy to go with a baby. We ended up watching them right down the street from the hotel and had a great view! We were far enough away that Hannah didn’t get scared of the “booms” but enjoyed watching the colors!

Today we went to Mt. Vernon which was George Washington’s home. It is only about 14 miles outside of Washington D.C. and was a beautiful drive. The grounds were very large and they had lots to see. We watched a video first to get our bearings, but then took off with Hannah as our navigator (she pretty much held the map the entire time!). We saw all the little buildings and gardens. We got to see Washington’s tomb (the old one and the new one). We toured the mansion last. It had lots of neat stories behind the furniture and artwork. We even got to see the bed where George Washington died (yeah…morbid, but cool). Someone asked the tour guides why they kept calling him “General Washington” instead of President Washington. They said that he was only president for 8 years, but general for most of his life and that he believed in handing over the presidency at the end of your term and relieving yourself of the job entirely (including the title). Before we left the mansion, we headed out back. The view of the Potomac River from the back porch was breath-taking! We thought that we would spend about an hour there, but ended up spending about six hours there! At the end of the day, you walk through George Washington’s museum (very similar to the Abraham Lincoln Presidental Library and Museum if you have ever been there). We even got to see George Washington’s dentures! They were pretty gross!

Today, we ended up going all over Washington D.C. Nate had his meeting in the morning, but was done by ten o’clock so we headed downtown. We went to the National Archives first. We got to see the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. It was funny because everyone who was there (even security guards) kept talking about the movie “National Treasure.” It’s either funny or sad the way that modern media influences society. After the Archives, we headed over to the Mall for a picnic lunch. We then went to the Smithsonian of Natural History. Hannah liked the Dinosaurs and kept trying to talk to the wax figures. Silly girl! We then walked down the entire mall. We saw the Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial, WWI Memorial, Korean War Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It was pretty spectacular! We were pretty worn out by the end of the night, so we took a taxi back to the hotel. We all got a good night’s sleep that night!

Nate’s convention started today and Dad, Hannah, and I headed to the Convention Center with him this morning. We all received our badges and headed to the EXPO. It was quite impressive (but not as large as when I went to the NEA conference in Orlando and Chicago). I did good trying to NOT pick up all the free *junk* they give you. The only thing I did pick up were free tickets to Madame Tussaud’s and some free cotton candy! Yumm-o! In the afternoon, we headed back and Hannah took a LONG nap. I read my Super Nanny Confident Baby Care book that Amy got me for my birthday and dad did work. That evening, we decided to go for a “little walk” to find something to eat for dinner. Well…our little walk ended up being a mile walk down to the White House! It was a lot smaller than I remembered, but pretty in a simple way! Here is a photo of Hannah and I in front of the White House.

We made it to Washington D.C. today! Our hotel is…okay…we are staying at the Hilton Washington. The room is small and they did not have a refridgerator for us (even though we specifically requested and were assured that we would have one) for Hannah’s milk. We walked around a little today and discovered that Hannah is quite the navigator. She loves maps! Give her a map and she’s content for hours!

Today we made it to Morgantown, West Virginia on our adventure east to Washington D.C. Fortunately, we have family that lives in Morgantown so we were able to stay with them for the night! Hannah got to meet Uncle Pat and Aunt Kathy for the first time! She was pretty shy at first, but their dog, Mercedes, quickly got her giggling and squealing in delight!
